The name Cernobbio is derived from 'Coenobium', which was an old convent, built where the magnificent hotel Villa D'Este is now situated, at the foot of Monte Bisbino, which is reputedly one of the most luxurious hotels in the world.
Cernobbio is a really pretty town and the old part, dating back to the thirteenth century, winds its way along the edge of the lake where you will find wonderful shops and restaurants. The picturesque houses, narrow streets and alley ways all add to its great atmosphere. There are many sights to see and places to visit, including the Church of St Michele di Rovenna where you will see an eleventh century Romanesque Processional Cross and also a carved baroque alter, which was designed by G.B. Barberini. Villa Pizzo, originally built in the sixteenth century, also has a vast park with a wide variety of plants. The route up to Monte Bisbino is truly spectacular, which stands at 1.325 meters, and the views across to the Swiss mountains are absolutely breathtaking. | |
